The Copper Canyon, one of the world's most spectacular
geological wonders, is visited by people from all over the world.
The Copper Canyon is located in northern Mexico deep in the Sierra
Madre Mountains with dimensions four times greater and 300 feet
deeper than the Grand Canyon. The Canyon is best explored by train
via the Chihuahua al Pacifico, reputed to be one of the most breathtaking
train rides in the world.
The train
passes through 86 tunnels, crosses 37 bridges, and climbs from sea
level to almost 8,000 feet in elevation. The train actually crosses
over its self as it traverses the rugged mountain and canyon lands
taking you from the arid desert foothills through spectacular canyons
and tunnels to the homeland of the Tarahumara Indians high in the
Sierra Madres. Travel wise tourists know that this trip is best
begun and ended in El Fuerte from the Villa Del Pescador.

Accommodations in the Canyon
All tours begin and end at Villa Del Pescador
located in the colonial city of El
Fuerte. Villa Del Pescador offers quaint
rooms with private baths off of the courtyard and pool and is just
steps away from downtown El Fuerte. Open patio style dining offers
a variety of menu options including traditional Mexican style cuisine.
Local tour options can be explored in the "El Fuerte local
tours" section.
For your continuing journey
through the Copper Canyon, Villa Del Pescador will arrange accommodations
utilizing the unique hotels located in the secluded valleys of Mexico's
Sierra Madre Mountains.
Located
in Cerocahui,
a short 5 hour train ride from El Fuerte, is one of the prettiest
little villages in the Sierras. Here you will enjoy accommodations
at the Paraiso Del Oso Lodge, Paradise of the Bear. The lodge offers
a remote yet comfortable place to stay while exploring the area.
Guests can enjoy beautiful areas for hiking, horseback riding, bike
riding, bird watching or just settling down with a good book and
wonderful fellow travelers. Guided tours are available through the
canyon rim to Cerro Gallegos Point which will provide a beautiful
view of the Urique Canyon. Followed by a tour through the Tarahumara
Pueblo of Cerocahui, taking you to the town's Jesuit mission church
and Tarahumara Indian boarding school. Doug Rhodes, an ex-patriot,
is the owner and your host at the Paraiso Del Oso Lodge.
Named "The Viewpoint",
El Divisadero,
is a perfect location to explore panoramic views of the canyon.
El Divisadero is an approximate 6 hour train ride from El Fuerte.
Guests will stay at the Mansion Tarahumara, a medieval castle-style
hotel, just a short walk away from the canyon rim. Local tours and
horseback riding are available, however we suggest that self exploration
and hiking is more suitable and intriguing.
Located 7,668 feet high into
the Sierra Madre Mountains visitors will find the beautiful town
of Creel.
Guests visiting Creel will stay at the Best Western Lodge at Creel.
The train ride to Creel is an approximate 8-9 hour ride from El
Fuerte that allows guests to the view the many facets of the canyon
through the train. Arriving in Creel in the late afternoon will
require guests to spend an additional day in Creel. Spending the
additional day in Creel will allow many wonderful tours around the
unique logging village, including a tour to the Valley of the Mushrooms.
Tours in Creel will be customized for each individual or group.
